Thank you to all involved. The company very efficiently took care of all the permit and approval paperwork with the local authority. They then expertly removed the old Kerbs and paving, fitted new dropped Kerbs and perfectly re-laid the paving – sloping to align with the new Kerbs. Everything left clean and tidy. They know their business and we thoroughly recommend their services.

We are fully licenced and insured drop kerb contractors, partnering with the local council and Highways Authority to carry out every job in compliance with all essential regulations.

In most cases you don’t need to apply for anything from the council, we take care of all of that for you. We will submit the application and you will receive an email from the council on approval.

A kerb drop is a legal requirement if you wish to drive over the pavement onto your residential or commercial property.

Any access onto a public highway from a domestic or commercial driveway area should have a vehicle crossover.

Kerb dropping permits vehicles to cross the pavement from the road to a driveway and it is a legal requirement if you intend to drive across the pavement onto your property.

Putting in a vehicle access crossover can make a significant improvement to easy access your property along with helping to ensure people do not park across your driveway.

The law regarding the access states: If you plan to drive a vehicle over the footway into your driveway off a highway, then you will need to make these changes to your access.

If you do not, you must never drive over the footway. If you do this, you are breaking the law and enforcement action could be taken to stop such practice.

The pavement may need to be reinforced in front of the property, and in many cases, it may be essential for lampposts, manhole covers and other street furniture to be moved.

Kerb drops, also called vehicle access crossovers, are an alteration to the footpath. It involves lowering the kerb and preparing new foundations to the paving to make it possible for a car to be driven onto the front area of a property.

The work involves lowering the kerbstones and bolstering the pavement to create a ramp, and must solely be performed by an authorised provider with Street Works Accreditation, and who have the required Public Liability insurance to comply with the local authorities requirements.

Vehicle access cross overs comprise normally of 3 or 4 dropped kerbs with a tapered or transition kerb on either side. The conventional maximum total width at road level for a VAC is 3.6 metres (i.e. normally 4 kerbs).

We have many years experience in installing drop kerbs and applying for the relevant planning permission. We can work in conjunction with your local county council  while complying with all essential regulations.

You can either apply to your local council for permission for kerb dropping outside your property or we can apply to your local authority in your place.

We are members of the Streetworks Qualifications Register (SWQR). The SWQR holds details of qualified providers who have gained the proper qualifications in relation to the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, which is necessary for any provider excavating a highway.

The huge growth in interest for off-street parking has seen more and more people drop kerbs to establish car standing at the front of their properties.

Research by home insurer Direct Line shows that off-street parking is regarded by estate agents as a desirable feature which adds market value to a residential or commercial property. This, combined with increasing parking limitations in many residential locations, has brought about planning applications  increase greatly over recent years.

However while putting in car standing space to the front of your home may add market value to your property, there are numerous things to think about, not least environmental issues, and flooding is a major issue.

When you switch out a front garden with hard standing, rainwater can no longer soak into the ground. As more and more households take this step, the cumulative effect seriously increases the danger of flooding, so it’s essential to incorporate drainage in your plans.

Planning permission is normally called for if you wish to drop the kerb outside your property to permit a car to cross the pavement. This is because the pavement might need to be reinforced to take the weight of vehicles and prevent them from damaging the surface or any pipes or cables underneath. It is in addition to ensure the new access will never be a safety risk to other highway users.

You can find out if you need planning permission by getting in touch with your local council (you can find the relevant council at the government website). How much it costs to apply will depend on your specific location.

If permission is given, you then you need to locate a local professional to perform the work for you.

It’s definitely not a DIY job as the council will have requirements that service providers must meet. Some will only allow you to use their approved contractors, while others make it possible for you to use your own, just as long as they are certified to the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, and hold public liability insurance. For this case, there might be an additional charge for highway inspections by the council.

However first it’s worth establishing if consent is likely to be given. Below is a checklist of points to consider. If any one of these criteria is not met, planning permission is probably to be denied:

  • Your front garden must be large enough for you to park your vehicle completely on your property.
  • The kerb must be at least 4.8 m from the front of your house; or 6m if the parking area is in front of an entrance or garage.
  • The parking area must be at least 2.4 m wide.
  • The proposed access to your property must be more than 10m away from a road junction; 15m away from busy junctions or on major roads.
  • It has to be at least 1.5 m away from street lamps and other street furniture.
  • It must meet visibility guidelines; this is dependent on the type of road.
  • Suitable drainage must be provided to remove the excess surface water.
The extraction of tree roots must be avoided.
  • The incline from your home to the road must not be too steep.
  • Lastly, you as the property owner must consent to the kerb being dropped; as an example, a renter can not apply on their landlord’s behalf.

Q and A’s

Prices vary depending on where you live, how many kerbs are to be dropped and whether or not you wish to extend an already-dropped kerb. Some councils and contractors provide an extended dropped curb for no cost, while others charge up to £1800. The job itself usually takes around 1 to 2 days.

Highways Act 1980 Section 184, makes it a crime to drive a vehicle along a footway. They can be used to permit vehicles to cross the public footway.

Five kerb sections will be required to make a driveway average. You will need to obtain permission from your local Council as highway authority, assuming that the Council owns the road and footpath. The Council might decide not to grant permission, either as a roads authority or planning authority, or both.

A dropped curb is the area where the vehicle crosses over from the road to the property’s rear. It’s often a driveway that has a droppedkerb.

A vehicle parked partially or fully across a dropped curb is considered obstruction. The police or the local council can enforce this violation. Even though it sounds absurd, you may be issued a PCN to park on top of your own dropped curb.

Parking across a dropped kerb is a parking contravention for which a Penalty Charge Notice can be issued. If you park across a dropped curb, you will be charged with an offense unless you have permission.

Adding a spot for a car will undoubtedly bring extra value to your property, but the amount will naturally depend on whereabouts you live. Also, you must apply for a drop kerb to your property.

Between the junction’s entrance and the proposed location for vehicular access, there must be at most 10m. The vehicle must not be parked within 10 metres of any road or pavement.

If you plan to remove the kerb on your property and allow cars to cross the pavement, permission is required. Because vehicles can cause damage to the pavement, or to any pipes or cables under it, the pavement may need reinforcement.

A dropped kerb will be required if your plan is to drive your vehicle over the footway in your driveway, off a highway. A dropped kerb is required for any vehicle that crosses the footway. If you do, you will be in violation of the law. Enforcement action may be taken to stop you from doing so.
