Was quoted a ridiculous price by the council so got in touch with these guys and they have been spot on. A fair price and I'm chuffed with the work they've done. Would definitely use them again for any future work

Thank you to all involved. The company very efficiently took care of all the permit and approval paperwork with the local authority. They then expertly removed the old Kerbs and paving, fitted new dropped Kerbs and perfectly re-laid the paving – sloping to align with the new Kerbs. Everything left clean and tidy. They know their business and we thoroughly recommend their services.

We are fully licenced and insured drop kerb contractors, partnering with the local council and Highways Authority to carry out every job in compliance with all essential regulations.

In most cases you don’t need to apply for anything from the council, we take care of all of that for you. We will submit the application and you will receive an email from the council on approval.

A kerb drop is a legal necessity if you wish to drive across the pavement onto your residential or commercial property.

Any entry onto a public highway from a residential or commercial driveway area should have a vehicle crossover.

Kerb dropping enables vehicles to cross the pavement from the road to a driveway and it is a legal necessity if you intend to drive across the pavement onto your property.

Installing a vehicle access crossover can make a significant improvement to accessing your property along with helping to make sure people do not park in front of your driveway.

The law pertaining to the access states: If you intend to drive a vehicle over the footway into your driveway off a highway, then you will need to make these changes to your access.

If you do not, you must never drive over the footway. If you do so, you are breaking the law and enforcement action might be taken to prevent such practice.

The pavement may need to be reinforced in front of the property, and in many cases, it may be necessary for lampposts, manhole covers and other street furniture to be moved.

Kerb drops, also called vehicle access crossovers, are an alteration to the footpath. It involves lowering the kerb and laying new foundations to the paving to enable a car to be driven onto the front area of a property.

The work involves lowering the kerbstones and strengthening the pavement to create a ramp, and must solely be performed by an authorised provider with Street Works Accreditation, and who have the required Public Liability insurance to comply with the local authorities regulations.

Vehicle access cross overs comprise normally of 3 or 4 dropped kerbs with a tapered or transition kerb on either side. The conventional maximum total width at road level for a VAC is 3.6 metres (i.e. normally 4 kerbs).

We have many years experience in installing drop kerbs and making an application for the relevant planning permission. We can work in partnership with your local county council  while complying with all necessary regulations.

You can either apply to your local council for approval for kerb dropping outside your property or we can apply to your local authority in your place.

The massive growth in demand for off-street parking has seen more and more people drop kerbs to establish car standing at the front of their homes.

Study by home insurer Direct Line shows that off-street parking is seen by estate agents as a desirable feature which adds value to a residential or commercial property. This, combined with increasing parking restrictions in lots of residential areas, has brought about planning applications  increase greatly over recent years.

But while putting in car standing space to the front of your home might add value to your property, there are many things to take into consideration, not least environmental issues, and flooding is a big issue.

When you replace a front garden with hard standing, rain can no longer soak into the ground. As increasingly more households take this step, the cumulative effect severely increases the risk of flooding, so it’s important to incorporate drainage in your plans.

Planning permission is generally required if you wish to drop the kerb outside your property to permit a car to cross the pavement. This is due to the fact that the pavement might need to be reinforced to take the weight of motor vehicles and help prevent them from damaging the surface or any water pipes or cables underneath. It is in addition to ensure the new access will never be a safety risk to other highway users.

You can learn if you need planning permission by getting in touch with your local council (you can identify the relevant council at the government website). How much it costs to apply will depend upon your location.

If permission is approved, you then you need to locate a local contractor to perform the work for you.

It’s certainly not a DIY job as the council will have requirements that contractors must meet. Some will only allow you to use their endorsed contractors, while others make it possible for you to use your own, just as long as they are certified to the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, and carry public liability insurance. In this case, there might be an added fee for highway inspections by the council.

But first it’s worth establishing if permission is likely to be granted. Below is a list of considerations. If any one of these criteria is not really met, planning permission is most likely to be denied:

  • Your front garden needs to be large enough for you to park your vehicle fully on your property.
  • The kerb needs to be at minimum 4.8 m from the front of your house; or 6m if the parking spot is in front of a door or garage.
  • The parking area must be at least 2.4 m wide.
  • The suggested access to your property must be more than 10m away from a road junction; 15m away from busy junctions or on primary roads.
  • It must be at least 1.5 m away from street lights and other street furniture.
  • It must meet visibility standards; this is dependent on the type of road.
  • Suitable drainage needs to be provided to take the surplus surface water.
The extraction of tree roots must be avoided.
  • The slope from your property to the road must not be too steep.
  • Finally, you as the home owner must consent to the kerb being dropped; for instance, a renter can not apply on their landlord’s behalf.

Q and A’s

Prices will vary depending on the location and width of your pavement. Some contractors and councils offer an extended dropped kerb for free, while some charge up to $1800 or more. The entire job takes about 1 to 2 hours.

Highways Act 1980 Section 184, makes it a crime to drive a vehicle along a footway. They can be used to permit vehicles to cross the public footway.

An average driveway will have five kerb sections. Your local Council will be your highway authority. This assumes that the Council has the road and footpath. The Council could refuse permission, as a roads authority, planning authorities, or both.

A dropped curb is the area where the vehicle crosses over from the road to the property’s rear. A driveway often has a dropped curb.

If you park your vehicle partially or completely across a dropped kerb, it is considered obstruction. This can be enforced either by the police and the council. As absurd as it might sound, you can receive a PCN to park across your own dropped-kerb.

Parking across a dropped street is a parking violation that can result in a Penalty Cost Notice. If you park across a dropped curb, you will be charged with an offense unless you have permission.

A spot for a vehicle will bring additional value to your property. The amount you pay will depend on whereabouts. A drop kerb outside of your property will require you to complete an application.

It must be at least 10 m between the entrance to the junction or sharp corner and where the proposed vehicular accessibility is located. The vehicle must not be parked within 10 metres of any road or pavement.

To allow a car on the pavement to cross it, you will need permission. This is because pavement may need to have additional strength to handle the vehicle’s weight, as well as protect any pipes or cables underneath.

Dropped kerb is required if you plan to drive your vehicle across the footway from your driveway onto a highway. You cannot drive on the footway if you don’t have a dropped curb. You are violating the law and could face enforcement action.
